Description
Health Connected’s Teen Talk Middle School (TTMS) curriculum is a comprehensive and inclusive educational resource designed to guide students through the complexities of sexual health, relationships, and self-understanding. Delivered in a minimum of 10 hours over two or more weeks, this curriculum lays a strong foundation for making healthy, respectful, and informed decisions. Using gender-inclusive language and trauma-informed teaching strategies, all students are encouraged to participate in conversations and activities that reflect and honor diverse experiences.
Through 12 engaging sessions, Teen Talk explores a wide range of essential topics. Students learn about sexual and reproductive anatomy, the process of conception and fetal development, and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). They examine a variety of birth control methods and pregnancy options, gaining the knowledge to make informed choices about their reproductive health. Students are empowered to develop critical thinking and decision-making skills, helping them navigate peer pressure, consent, and complex emotions with confidence.
Recognizing and embracing the diversity of human experience, Teen Talk provides a safe space to discuss gender identity and sexual orientation, fostering empathy and acceptance. Students also explore how media and societal expectations shape body image and self-esteem, engaging in thoughtful discussions that promote body positivity and challenge unrealistic standards.
Learning how to have healthy relationships and respectful interactions is a cornerstone of Teen Talk. Students will explore the qualities of healthy versus unhealthy relationships, practice effective communication and boundary-setting, and understand the importance of consent. These lessons equip students to build and maintain positive connections with peers, partners, and trusted adults.
One of the key goals of Teen Talk is to connect students with reliable sources of information and support. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to identify trusted adults – such as parents, caregivers, teachers, and healthcare providers – and to engage them in open conversations about sexual health and relationships. An interview assignment helps to strengthen these connections and fosters ongoing dialogue at home and in their communities.
Teen Talk is more than just a set of lessons; it is a transformative learning experience that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed, healthy, and respectful decisions. By creating an inclusive, affirming, and engaging environment, Teen Talk helps students navigate adolescence with empathy, critical thinking, and a sense of responsibility toward themselves and others.
